痛失俠醫林杰樑病逝僅55歲
Renowned toxicologist passes away at 55
(The China Post, August 6, 2013) —Renowned Taiwanese toxicology expert Lin Chieh-liang (林杰樑) yesterday passed away at the age of 55 due to septic shock and multiple organ failure after four days of medical treatment for a lung infection.
在肺部感染後經過四天的治療，知名的台灣毒物專家林杰樑醫師昨天仍舊因為敗血性休克以及多重器官衰竭而以55歲之齡離開人間。
Lin, director of the Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital's Toxicology Division, was sent to the intensive care unit Friday morning but was transferred to the general ward in the afternoon. His condition worsened and he was sent back to the intensive care unit for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy.
林醫師是林口長庚醫院的毒物科主任，他在上週五早上被送到加護病房但在當天午後就轉入普通病房。他的病況隨後再度沉痾並被送回加護病房進行體外膜氧合(葉克膜)療法急救。
The medical team in charge of Lin said yesterday that his condition continued to worsen despite its best efforts.
負責林醫師醫療的團隊昨天表示，儘管盡了各種的努力，林醫師的健康狀況仍是持續惡化。
According to the hospital, Lin's family decided to take him off life support at noon yesterday, hoping to release him from his suffering.
根據醫院方面的說法，林醫師的家屬因希望不要讓他受到持續的折磨，決定在昨天中午移除他的生命維持系統。
Huang Ching-tai (黃景泰), director of the hospital's Division of Infectious Diseases, said that the medical team spent four days looking for the virus that caused Lin's lung infection.
醫院的感染科主任黃景泰指出，醫療團隊花了四天的時間一直在找尋造成林醫師肺病感染的病毒為何。
“However, we could not find the virus that lead to his disease ... It is likely a rare virus that is unknown to the medical field,” Huang said.
黃醫師提到，「然而，我們找不出造成他體內疾病的那株病毒。那可能是一種罕見病種，在醫療界仍屬於未知的類型」。
The hospital prepared boards for people to write down their blessings for Lin. It collected a total of three boards filled with words from the public, as well as hospital employees and patients.
醫院準備了牆板要讓民眾寫下他們對於林醫師的祝福。而民眾、醫院同仁以及病患們，一共為林醫師寫下了滿滿三面牆板的祈願文字。
Lin Tzou-yien (林奏延), deputy head of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, said that it is possible for some viruses or germs to cause multiple organ failure within two to three days.
衛生署副署長林奏延醫師認為，某些病毒或細菌有可能在兩到三天內造成人體多重器官衰竭。
“Lin Chieh-liang had been undergoing dialysis for 20 years ... It is possible that his immune system reacted too severely, causing severe inflammation,” said the official.
林副署長說，「林杰樑醫師已經持續洗腎了有20年之久。他的免疫系統有可能是發生太強烈的反應而造成嚴重肺炎」。
Family and friends mourn for the deceased. The toxicologist's son yesterday posted on his Facebook page and announced his father's passing along with words to remember him.
林醫師的家人與親友們同聲哀悼。林醫師的兒子昨天在父親的Facebook頁面上公布他父親辭世的消息並發表文章以表達對其父的紀念。
He said that his father was a good doctor and an outstanding teacher, and that he was very heartbroken over his father's death.
他提到林醫師是一位好醫生，也是一位傑出的老師。他對父親過世一事感到相當的悲痛。
Lin Tzou-yien, a friend of the toxicologist, said that Lin Chieh-liang was never afraid to stand up for what he believes in, especially about food safety issues.
林副署長身為林醫師的朋友，回想林醫師從來就是為了自己的信念，特別是在和食品衛生安全議題有關的方面，會毫不畏懼的挺身對抗。
“Lin Chieh-liang was very passionate about teaching new doctors, which earned him a lot of respect,” Lin Tzou-yien said.
林副署長回憶，「林杰樑醫師生前致力於指導後進，使他獲得許多人的敬重」。
